Episode 7: Meh
by Martin on Nov.06, 2009, under Uncategorized
So…so what. Not only is the acting really bad, I just don’t care. Last night’s episode was a big red herring with a game-changer ending that simply robbed the series of all it’s drama. I mean really. The most interesting mystery to me was whether or not the future in this series was mutable. Well, last night proved that it was. So now what. I just don’t care.

Who Simon Kills

Since I’m so far behind in posting screen captures of last weeks episode, I thought I’d pass along this link from TVFanatics who posted some of their own screen captures of Simon’s victim.
Double Slit explained
by Martin on Nov.02, 2009, under Ruminations
Props to FlashForecast’s twitter feed for posting the most understandable explanation of the “Double Slit” experiment I’ve seen. If we take this as a good parallel for what occured during the flash-forward, it certainly seems to imply that the future is immutable. That is, until observed, all futures are possible. But, just like the electron’s in the experiment, once observed, all possibilities collapse into one reality.
Episode 6 Ruminations
by Martin on Oct.30, 2009, under Ruminations
No spoiler tags for my ruminations on last nights episode. Not because there are no spoilers, but because the hack writing and horid acting doesn’t deserve the effort.
- The “double slit” joke…come on FlashForward, you’re better than that
- So, after a terrorist attack against FBI agents, in the nation’s capitol, with machine guns and GRENADE LAUNCHERS, agents are simply allowed to hop on a plane a couple hours later and head home? No questioning? No sticking around to, you know, investigate? Come on.
- So Demitri decides that the hit is because Mark talked about the investigation for the first time right before it. Thus, he concludes (weirdly) that “China is a dead end.” OK, not sure how that follows. But even if you follow his logic, doesn’t that mean the leaker was in the hearing. Wouldn’t that be a good place to start?
- Ummm, that was a long ass train ride.
- OK, so the one substantive thing we learned last night: a half a million people are in Time Square celebrating in their flash-forward. So that confirms what we suspected based on Mark’s flash-forward, namely that this is the same timeline. But that just reraises all sorts of questions that I really am less and less inclined to believe the writers have a good explanations for. Why are so many people doing mundane things? Why isn’t everyone during the flash-forward seeing themselves going “holy Sh*t this is what I saw in my flash-forward”? Why isn’t Mark adding more useful pieces of information to his board (instead of “blue hand” why not just put the address of the place Demetri ended up last night?) Why isn’t everyone looking at a list of stock prices or instructions to their earlier self (‘don’t bother asking Billy out. He says no.’). Why aren’t all of the FBI agent’s who know Mark’s vision hiding in a closet (along with, say, a swat team) waiting for the mask gunman?
- I knew the second we saw the masked guys in black on Halloween that they were kids throwing eggs. Come on.
- So, while Olivia and Lloyd are basking in their post-coital glow, there kids are just wandering around the house (and at 10pm)? For that matter, this again confirms how loose Flash-forward is playing with its own rules since we obviously haven’t seen all of Dylan, Lloyd, Charlie, or Olivia’s flashforward (we know this because we haven’t seen how Charlie knows ‘D. Gibbons is a bad man’ or how Dylan know’s Olivia’s name) yet Senator Clemente made such a big deal of everyone else clearly remembering 2 minutes and 17 seconds.
- Joseph Fiennes is not a good actor.
- 20 million people died during the flash-forward? How? And if so, it seems like the world would still be in a whole lot more turmoil than it is.
A Quick theory about FlashForward
by Martin on Oct.26, 2009, under Ruminations
At the closed senate hearing in Episode 5 we here from three agencies prior to our main characters testifying. Someone from the EPA rules out any sort of environmental contaminant . Someone from the CIA says it was China. Someone (from NASA? it’s unclear) says it was aliens. The last two were presented in a way that they are supposed to be taken as jokes.
Here’s my thought: what if all four are actually true? We know that in Somalia the mystery towers seemed to be emitting some fog during the 1991 black-out. So a possible environmental contaminant is a check. We know that there is at least an Asian connection due to the attacks in episode 5 (though they aren’t necessarily Chinese). So call “China” a tentative check. And while we’ve had zero evidence of aliens, we do know that two people were awake when everyone else blacked-out. Seems like those two people would have to be very different from everyone else. Aliens seems as plausible as anything else at this point.
Just a thought.
Thoughts on Episode 5: Gimme Some Truth
by Martin on Oct.26, 2009, under Ruminations
So, nothing from episode 5 seemed particularly screen-capture worthy, but here are some thoughts. I’ll put it in the spoiler tag, though I’m not sure that’s really worthwhile anymore (if you have thoughts, let me know). All things considered, last nights episode was the best since the pilot. Put aside a few things and it was actually a pretty enjoyable episode.
Pre- and Post- Differences in Episode 5
by Martin on Oct.23, 2009, under Ruminations
So I watched, and rewatched, and re-rewatched the intro scene with Mark and Wedeck and there are some very clear differences. At first I thought it was just what was edited in and out of each scene. For example, the first scene leaves out Stanford and Mark watching the Vice President announcement. But there are definite differences in the conversation Mark had with Janis as well:
Pre-conversation
Mark: Hey, just wanted to share some good news with you. Even though the whole trips been a bit of a disaster, Wedeck pulled some rabbit. Who know’s? Maybe he wouldn’t have had too…
(BOOM)
Post coversation:
Janis: Hey Mark
Mark: Just want to share some good news with you. We got our funding, Mosaiac’s still alive.
Janis: Cause of the Somali intel?
Mark: No, Wedeck pulled some rabbit. Who know’s? Maybe he wouldn’t have had too…
(BOOM)
–
So I can get us not seeing Janis’s side of the conversation in the pre-conversation. But why did the post-conversation leave out “Even though the whole trips been a bit of a disaster.”? Maybe I’m making a mountain out of a molehill here but the show definitely seems to be going for a Lost-ian “everything’s done on purpose” kinda feel, so this discrepancy seems worth noting.
Janis’ Flash-Forward
by Martin on Oct.20, 2009, under Ruminations
Something occured to me today about Janis’ vision. She’s pretty pregnant in her vision (seen here). Given her size and the ultrasound, I’d probably put her around 5-6 months in. So if everyone flashed to April 29th, then that would put conception somewhere between October 29 and November 29. Looks like we won’t have to wait long to see the father.
Episode 4: Awful, just awful
by Martin on Oct.18, 2009, under Screen Captures
Well, if I was waiting for Flashforward to reedeem itself, it failed with Episode 4. Not much in the way of new information on the blackout, bad acting and a mix of a cop show I don’t want to watch and hospital show I don’t want to watch. Here’s the one screenshot worth sharing:
